If you remove enough letters, you end up with Ada. An Aardvark is both an unusual creature, and somewhat endearing. Plus they eat bugs, which is a good quality for the mascot. Also "Ada the Aardvark" flows nicely off the tongue. I wouldn't be surprised if Ada is a name that people commonly give to their Aardvarks. :-) It also helps that in the world of mascots, an Aardvark mascot likely is the one at the top of the list, if the list is sorted.
