One of the shortcomings I see with availability of Java is that people are so busy building bytecode tools that they are skipping entirely the compilation of Java into native machine language. One of my favorite platform vendors is not skipping it, but another favorite of mine didn't understand the issue, so that indicates where they stand. I was happy to hear Sun's Chief Science Officer at the RSA Conference indicate that to his way of thinking the WWW graphics use of Java was a distraction from the strength that he saw in Java as a general language (as compared to C*).
