A distribution will only ship one specific version of gcc where the ability to compile the kernel is the most important feature. 2nd comes availability at time the distribution was created. If you have SuSE 9.x you get a gcc 3.3.x - notoriously bad release for Ada. If you have SuSE 10 you get: GNAT 4.0.2 20050901 (prerelease) (SUSE Linux) "prerelease" - makes me uneasy.
