PC OS share, number of *BSD workstations in tech companies, etc.. I don't doubt that (even outside Yahoo!) there are still some machines that run FreeBSD and relatives for good reasons. Could you point to up-to-date resources on BSD usage? Like, "We, a major non-Yahoo! company, will extend our use of *BSD driven computers because we think so-and-so"? (The FreeBSD advocacy pages refer you to an installation statistics site. By this, and by other equally vague sources of information, Solaris, Linux, and Windows 2003, and lesser known non-PC solutions seem to be the more frequent choices of major sites connected to the net. Obviously, this just shows what is reachable from outside, but still...) I notice that there are some single board computers for use with firewall software, based on FreeBSD, good. FreeBSD people seem to have taken pride in quality control. So we could hope to have non-PC, non-mainframe, small computers that would be a good match for what Ada is about. OTOH, I see many hints to either proprietary OSs, or Linux, for example in DSL boxes or mobile computers (phones, navigation). Or Microsoft efforts to reduce Cost of Market Entrance for mobile computing companies, and their generous offerings for universities--having obvious consequences. This is why I think that the future of *BSD is more "at risk" than that of Ada. And for good or bad, that of GNAT on BSD. Write a killer app and things will change.
