The first I saw of this technique was in the excellent and ahead-of-its-time book by Barton & Nackman, _Scientific and Engineering C++_ (which, despite its name, is much more a book about C++ templates and other fundamental techniques). The C++ standards committee had the advantage of reading this book before completing the standard, and found the techniques so compelling that they were motivated to make sure that the standardized language would support them properly.
