I'm not used to using the word "subsystem" that way. e.g, in Orbitals (www.adapower.com) there is a child of a window type where the additional data is 3D graphic stuff which is displayed in user selectable mono or stereo and can be rotated by mouse movements, quite independently of the data generating program. I would call that a "subsystem" since it is a system in itself, and clearly a distinct separate part of the entire app-system. It is an extension of a simple "window", but not an extension of Windows. But that does leave me with no simple word connoting a certain thickness layer of a binding.
